Uruguay is a South American country located on the east coast of the continent. It is bordered by Argentina to the west and Brazil to the north. Uruguay has a population of about 3.4 million people and its capital city is Montevideo. The name "Uruguay" comes from the Uruguay River which forms the border between Argentina and Uruguay. Uruguay's flag is blue and white with a sun in the center. The sun has 16 rays which represent the 16 departments, or states, of Uruguay. Uruguay is sometimes called "the Switzerland of South America" because it is a peaceful country with a stable democracy. It is also known for its beaches, its beef, and its red wine. Uruguay's economy is mostly based on agriculture and livestock. Uruguay is one of the world's leading exporters of beef. It is also a major producer of wool, rice, soybeans, and corn. Tourism is also an important part of Uruguay's economy. Every year, millions of people visit Uruguay's beaches, especially during the summer. Uruguay is a very diverse country. Its people are of European, African, and indigenous descent. Spanish is the official language of Uruguay, but many people also speak English, Portuguese, and French. Uruguay has a long history of peace and democracy. It has never been involved in a war and has always had a democratically-elected government.
