Ferdinand Magellan explained to kids
Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese explorer who was born in around 1480. He is best known for leading the first expedition to sail around the world. This journey took place between 1519 and 1522 and proved that the Earth was round.
Magellan grew up in a noble family but he ran away from home when he was around 18 years old to become a soldier. He first served in the army of the King of Portugal but later he joined the Spanish army.
In 1519, Magellan was given command of an expedition to sail around the world. This was a dangerous journey and many of the sailors died, but Magellan persevered. He eventually reached the Philippines, where he was killed in a battle in 1521. One of his ships, the Victoria, continued the journey and completed the circumnavigation of the globe in 1522.
