Classical antiquity explained to kids

Classical antiquity is the period of time spanning from the 8th century BC to the 6th century AD. It is usually considered to be the time period between the fall of the Roman Republic and the rise of the Byzantine Empire. During classical antiquity, various cultures flourished in different parts of the world. The major cultures of classical antiquity include the Roman, Greek, Egyptian, and Mesopotamian cultures. Each of these cultures had its own art, literature, and architecture. The Roman culture, for example, is known for its well-preserved ruins of temples and public baths. The Greek culture is known for its sculptures and pottery. The Egyptian culture is known for its pyramids and hieroglyphics. The Mesopotamian culture is known for its ziggurats and cuneiform writing. Classical antiquity was a time of great achievements in science and mathematics. The Greek mathematician Euclid developed the field of geometry. The Greek scientist Aristotle wrote on a wide range of topics, including physics, biology, and ethics. The Roman engineer Vitruvius wrote the first book on architecture. During classical antiquity, many of the world’s major religions were founded. The major religions of classical antiquity include Christianity, Islam, Judaism, and Hinduism. Classical antiquity was a time of great political changes. The Roman Republic was founded in 509 BC, and the Roman Empire was founded in 27 BC. The Greek city-states were replaced by the Roman province system. The Mesopotamian empires of Assyria and Babylon fell to the Persian Empire. Today, we still study classical antiquity in order to better understand the world we live in.
