Petra explained to kids
Petra is one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world. It is located in Jordan and was built by the Nabataeans, an ancient Arab people. Petra is half-built, half-carved into the rock of a mountain. It was originally designed as a city-state and was an important crossroads for trade.
Petra is most famous for its buildings and monuments, which are carved into the rock face. The most famous of these is Al-Khazneh, also known as The Treasury. Petra was rediscovered in 1812 by Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt. It was then lost to the world again until it was rediscovered by archaeologists in the early 20th century.
Today, Petra is one of Jordan's most popular tourist attractions. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985 and is also one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
