David was the youngest of eight sons of Jesse, a farmer from the tribe of Judah. His mother's name was Nitzevet and his father's was Eliab. When David was a young man, he was anointed by the prophet Samuel to be the future king of Israel. David's military exploits are recorded in the biblical book of Samuel. He is described as a man of great courage and strength, who defeating Goliath, a giant Philistine warrior, with a sling and a stone. David went on to become a great military leader, leading the Israelites to victory after victory. Under David's rule, the Israelites conquered Jerusalem and made it their capital. David was a man of great passion and compassion. He was a great poet and musician, and his Psalms are still sung today. David was a man of faith, who trusted in God even when things were tough. Even though David was a great king, he was not perfect. He committed adultery with Bathsheba and had her husband killed in battle. Despite his mistakes, David was a man after God's own heart, and he is remembered as one of the greatest kings in history.
