Dante Alighieri explained to kids

Dante Alighieri was an Italian poet during the Middle Ages. He is most well known for his epic poem, The Divine Comedy. This poem tells the story of a man who goes on a journey through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise. The Divine Comedy is one of the most important works of world literature. Dante was born in Florence, Italy in 1265. He was a member of a noble family. When he was nine years old, he was betrothed to a woman named Gemma di Manetto Donati. Dante studied at the Florence Cathedral School and the University of Bologna. He became a member of the White Guelphs, a political party that supported the Pope. Dante’s political career came to an end in 1302. He was exiled from Florence and went to live in Ravenna. In Ravenna, he worked on The Divine Comedy. He also wrote other works, including treatises on politics and philosophy. Dante died in Ravenna in 1321. He is buried in the Church of San Francesco.
