Eiffel Tower explained to kids
The Eiffel Tower is a metal tower in Paris, France. It is 324 metres (1,063 feet) tall and was built in 1889. Its construction took two years, and it was built for the World's Fair. The Eiffel Tower is the tallest structure in Paris and is the most-visited paid monument in the world.
The Eiffel Tower is named after its designer, Gustave Eiffel. He was a French civil engineer and architect. Many people believe that the Eiffel Tower is the symbol of Paris, but this is not true. The symbol of Paris is actually the statue of a woman called Marianne, which can be found on top of the Hôtel de Ville.
The Eiffel Tower has three levels. The first level is 57 metres (187 feet) high and has a restaurant called the Jules Verne. The second level is 115 metres (377 feet) high and has an observation deck. The third and highest level is276 metres (906 feet) high and has another observation deck. There are 1,665 steps to the top of the Eiffel Tower, but most people take the lift (elevator).
The Eiffel Tower was almost not built. Some people thought it was ugly and did not want it in Paris. However, Gustave Eiffel persuaded the city to let him build it, and now it is one of the most famous buildings in the world.
