In the Middle Ages, Serbia was part of the Byzantine and Bulgarian Empires. Serbia was conquered by the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century. Serbia regained its independence in the 19th century.
Today, Serbia is a member of the United Nations, the Council of Europe, and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe. Serbia is also a candidate for membership in the European Union.
