Reptile explained to kids
Reptiles are a group of animals that includes snakes, lizards, turtles, and crocodiles. They are cold-blooded, meaning that their body temperature depends on the temperature of their surroundings. Reptiles are covered in scales, which protect them from predators and keep them from getting too much sun. Some reptiles can breathe through their skin!
Reptiles are found all over the world, in warm climates as well as cold ones. Some reptiles, like the Komodo dragon, can grow to be very large. The smallest reptile is the dwarf gecko, which is only about 2.5 cm (1 inch) long.
Reptiles lay eggs, which they usually bury in the ground. The eggs have a hard shell that protects them until they hatch. Some reptiles, like turtles, carry their eggs with them until they can find a safe place to bury them.
Reptiles are predators, meaning that they hunt and eat other animals. Some of them, like the Komodo dragon, can be very dangerous to humans.
