Confucius (551 BC – 479 BC) was a Chinese teacher, politician, and philosopher. His philosophy emphasized personal and governmental morality, correctness of social relationships, justice, and sincerity. He was a prominent figure in Chinese history and his teachings and philosophy greatly influenced East Asian life and thought. His thoughts still have a significant impact on Chinese and East Asian culture and values today.
Confucius was born in the state of Lu in 551 BC. His father was a soldier and his mother was a housewife. As a child, he was bright and precocious. At the age of 19, he married a woman named Qi Guan. They had a son together named Li.
Confucius began his teaching career at the age of 50. For the next 20 years, he taught anyone who was willing to listen, including aristocrats and commoners. His students were known as "Disciples of Confucius."
Confucius's philosophy stresses the importance of family, community, and government. He believed that if people were kind to each other and worked together, society would be harmonious.
Confucius died in 479 BC at the age of 72. His teachings and philosophy continue to influence Chinese and East Asian culture and values today.
