Hungary is a landlocked country in Central Europe. The country is bordered by seven other countries: Austria, Croatia, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Ukraine. Hungary has a population of about 9.8 million people. The capital and largest city is Budapest. The official language is Hungarian. Hungary is a member of the European Union, NATO, the Council of Europe, the Visegrád Group, and the OECD. The Hungarian economy is the 57th-largest economy in the world and the fourth-largest in the European Union. Hungary is a developed country with a high-income economy and a very high Human Development Index score. Hungary was inhabited by Celts, Romans, and Huns before the Magyars (Hungarian people) arrived in the 9th century. The Kingdom of Hungary was established in 1000. The country was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire from 1867 to 1918. After World War I, Hungary was a republic from 1919 to 1946. From 1946 to 1989, Hungary was a communist state. After the fall of communism in 1989, Hungary became a democracy. Hungary is a beautiful country with many interesting places to visit. Some of the most popular tourist destinations include Budapest, Lake Balaton, and the Danube River.
