The Taj Mahal is a white marble mausoleum located in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India. It was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal. The Taj Mahal is widely recognized as "the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world's heritage". The Taj Mahal is on the south bank of the Yamuna river in a Mughal garden that includes four white marble minarets, a white marble mosque, a white marble guest house, and a reflecting pool. The main mausoleum building is in the center of the complex. It is a symmetrical building with an iwan (an arch-shaped doorway) topped by a large dome. The dome is surrounded by four smaller domes. The Taj Mahal is built of white marble inlaid with precious and semiprecious stones. The Taj Mahal was completed in 1653, and Shah Jahan died in 1666. His wife Mumtaz Mahal is buried in the mausoleum. The Taj Mahal was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. It is one of the Seven Wonders of the World, and it attracts about 7 million visitors a year.
