Gothic architecture was developed during this time, and new art styles, such as Romanesque and Gothic art, emerged. The High Middle Ages were also a time of great religious changes. Christianity became more widespread, and the Catholic Church became more powerful. New religious orders, such as the Franciscans and the Dominicans, were founded. The Crusades, a series of religious wars fought against the Muslims, began during this time. The High Middle Ages were also a time of great political changes. The feudal system, a system of government in which lords and ladies ruled over their land and people, began to break down. Kings began to claim more power, and new countries, such as France and England, were formed.
