Pakistan is a country located in southern Asia. The region now straddling the border of present-day Pakistan and Afghanistan is one of the most torn regions of the world. Pakistan is bordered by the India-administered Kashmir to the east, Afghanistan to the northwest and the nation of Iran and the whole of Balochistan to the west. To the south is the Arabian Sea with the port city of Karachi being located on its shores. Pakistan is the 33rd-largest country by area, spanning 881,913 square kilometers (340,509 square miles). As of 2017, the population of Pakistan was estimated to be 207,862,518. Pakistan is the sixth-most populous country in the world. Islamabad is the capital of Pakistan and the country's second-largest city. Pakistan's economy is the 24th-largest in the world in terms of purchasing power and 45th-largest in terms of nominal GDP. Pakistan has the world's second-largest Muslim population. It is the only country with nuclear weapons and is one of nine countries with the status of "major non-NATO ally".
