History of writing explained to kids
The history of writing is a long and complicated one. It is thought that writing first began around 4,000 years ago, in Mesopotamia. This is where the first known examples of writing were found, on pieces of clay called cuneiform tablets.
At first, only a few words were written down. But soon, people began writing sentences and even whole stories. Over time, different writing systems were developed. The most famous of these is probably the alphabet, which is used in many languages today.
The first alphabets were probably developed in Egypt and Canaan, around 3,500 years ago. But it wasn't until around 2,800 years ago that the first true alphabet was invented. This was the Phoenician alphabet, which was later adapted by the Greeks and the Romans.
From the Roman alphabet, we get the alphabet used in English today. This alphabet has 26 letters, which are all different shapes. Each letter represents a different sound.
The history of writing is full of interesting facts and stories. For example, did you know that the first known examples of writing were found on pieces of clay called cuneiform tablets? Or that the first true alphabet was invented by the Phoenicians, around 2,800 years ago?
