Engineering explained to kids

Engineering is the application of scientific knowledge and mathematical principles to practical problems in the design, construction and operation of structures, machines, materials and systems. Most engineering programs involve a concentration of study in an engineering specialty, along with courses in both mathematics and the basic sciences. The four-year curriculum typically leads to a bachelor of science degree in engineering. Engineers typically possess an academic degree in engineering. The length of study varies, but is typically four to five years for a bachelor's degree, and two or three years for a master's degree. In the United States, the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) is the primary accrediting body for engineering programs. Engineers are licensed by state governments to ensure that they are qualified to practice engineering and protect the public health, safety and welfare. There are four primary branches of engineering: • Civil engineering • Electrical engineering • Mechanical engineering • Chemical engineering Other engineering disciplines include aerospace, biomedical, computer, environmental, industrial, materials, and nuclear engineering. Engineering is a broad field with many specialties. The work of engineers is essential to the functioning of modern society. Engineering is involved in the design and construction of bridges, buildings, dams, roads, tunnels and other infrastructure; the development of electrical power, telecommunications and computer systems; the production of chemicals, fuels and pharmaceuticals; the operation of factories; and the cleaning of water and air.
