Helicopter explained to kids

A helicopter is a type of aircraft that has rotors on top of it. The rotors help the helicopter fly and steer. Helicopters are different from regular airplanes because they can fly up and down, and they can hover in the air. They are also able to land and take off in a small space. Most helicopters have one big rotor on top, and a smaller rotor on the back. The big rotor is powered by the engine, and the smaller rotor helps keep the helicopter balanced. Some helicopters have two big rotors that spin in opposite directions. This helps cancel out the spin from the engine, so the helicopter doesn't spin around. Helicopters can be used for many different things. They are used in the military, by police and ambulance services, and by people who need to get to a place that is hard to reach by car or plane. Some people even use helicopters for fun! Helicopters have been around since the early 1900s. The first person to fly a helicopter was French inventor Paul Cornu. He flew his helicopter a few feet off the ground for 20 seconds in November 1907. The first person to fly a helicopter for a longer time was Hungarian inventor János Csonka. He flew his helicopter for almost half a mile in June 1909. The first helicopter that could carry people was invented by French brothers Jacques and Louis Breguet. They flew their helicopter with two people on board in October 1910. The first helicopter that could be used by the military was invented by Igor Sikorsky. He flew his helicopter in September 1914.
