Anna Schwartz (born September 11, 1915) is an American economist. She is known for her work on monetary policy and economic history. Anna Schwartz was born in New York City. She attended the all-girls Hunter College High School and then graduated from Barnard College in 1935. She married Isaac Schwartz in 1938. The couple had two children. Anna Schwartz began her career as a research assistant at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) in 1941. She worked there for more than 50 years. She became a senior staff member in 1945 and a vice president in 1975. Schwartz is best known for her work on the Great Depression. She collaborated with Milton Friedman on A Monetary History of the United States, 1867-1960. The book argued that the Great Depression was caused by a decrease in the money supply. Schwartz has received many awards and honors. She was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1971 and the National Academy of Sciences in 1975. In 1987, she was awarded the John Bates Clark Medal, which is given to the economist under the age of 40 who has made the most significant contribution to economic thought and knowledge. Schwartz is currently a Distinguished Fellow of the American Economic Association and a member of the Council of Economic Advisers.
