Color explained to kids

Colors are all around us! They are in the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the way we decorate our homes, and in the natural world. Colors can be very bright or very subtle. They can make us feel happy, sad, excited, or calm. There are three primary colors: red, yellow, and blue. These colors cannot be made by mixing other colors together. All other colors are made by mixing these primary colors in different proportions. For example, orange is made by mixing red and yellow together, and purple is made by mixing red and blue together. White light is actually a mix of all the colors of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. When light hits an object, some colors are absorbed and some are reflected. The colors that are reflected off the object are the colors that we see. Have you ever wondered why the sky is blue? It's because when sunlight hits the atmosphere, the blue light is scattered more than the other colors. That's why the sky is blue during the day, but at sunset, the red and orange light is scattered more, making the sky appear those colors. There are millions of different colors, but we have given them names so that we can talk about them. Some colors have interesting names, like "turquoise" or "magenta." Can you think of any other colors with interesting names?
