Romanian is a Romance language spoken by around 24 million people as a native language, primarily in Romania and Moldova, and by another 4 million people as a second language. It has official status in Romania and the Republic of Moldova. It is one of the official languages of the European Union and the Latin Union. Romanian is a part of the Balkans-Romance group that evolved from several dialects of Vulgar Latin separated from the Western Romance during or after the 5th century. Today, Romanian is the official language of Romania and Moldova. It is one of the five languages with official status in the EU, alongside English, French, Spanish, and German. Romanian is also an official language of the Latin Union. Romanian has a rich vocabulary, with influence from Slavic languages, as well as from French, German, Italian, and Turkish. Romanian has also borrowed words from Hungarian, Albanian, Bulgarian, and Greek. The Romanian alphabet is based on the Latin alphabet, with additional letters for certain sounds. The Romanian alphabet has 21 letters: A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, Ș, T, Ț, U, V, W, X, Y, Z. Romanian is a Romance language, meaning that it is descended from Vulgar Latin, the Latin spoken by the common people in the Roman Empire. Romanian separated from other Romance languages around the 5th or 6th century. Romanian is part of the Balkans-Romance group of languages, which also includes Albanian, Bulgarian, Croatian, Macedonian, Serbian, and Slovene. These languages are all descended from Vulgar Latin, with Romanian being the most closely related to the other languages in the group.
