Latvia was ruled by Poland, Sweden, and Russia at different times. In 1918, Latvia gained independence from Russia. However, this only lasted for about 20 years and in 1940 Latvia was occupied by the Soviet Union. Latvia regained its independence in 1991. Latvia is a beautiful country with many forests, rivers, and lakes. It is also home to some interesting animals such as the brown bear, lynx, and elk. Riga, the capital, is a lovely city with many old buildings and a lively nightlife. Latvia is a great place to visit and has something to offer everyone.
