Hot air balloon explained to kids

A hot air balloon is a type of aircraft that uses hot air to float. The hot air is heated by a burner, which is usually fueled by propane. The hot air balloon was invented in 1783 by the brothers Joseph-Michel and Jacques-Etienne Montgolfier. A hot air balloon typically has a basket, or gondola, attached to the bottom of the envelope. The gondola is where the passengers ride. The envelope is made of fabric, and it is filled with hot air. The hot air is what makes the balloon float. The burner is used to heat the air inside the envelope. The hot air rises, and as it does, the balloon starts to float. The balloon can rise to altitudes of 10,000 feet or more! Hot air balloons are usually flown for pleasure, but they can also be used for scientific research or to carry cargo. A hot air balloon flight usually lasts for an hour or two. During the flight, the pilot can control the altitude of the balloon by adding or releasing hot air. The pilot also steers the balloon by moving it up or down in the wind. When it's time to land, the pilot starts to release the hot air from the envelope. The balloon starts to descend, and when it gets close to the ground, the pilot uses a dragline to help control the landing. Hot air balloons are a lot of fun! If you ever have a chance to go for a ride in one, you should definitely take it!
