Yemen explained to kids

Yemen is a country located in the Middle East. It is bordered by Saudi Arabia to the north, the Red Sea to the west, the Gulf of Aden and Arabian Sea to the south, and Oman to the east. Yemen covers an area of 527,970 square kilometers and has a population of around 28 million people. The capital city of Yemen is Sana'a. Yemen is a mountainous country with a deeply indented coastline. The highest point in Yemen is Jabal an Nabi Shu'ayb, which is 3,760 meters above sea level. The climate in Yemen is mostly hot and dry, with temperatures averaging 30 degrees Celsius in the coastal areas and 25 degrees Celsius in the mountains. Yemen is one of the poorest countries in the world. Over half of the population lives in poverty, and almost a quarter of the population is considered to be extremely poor. The unemployment rate in Yemen is high, especially among young people. The country also has a large number of internally displaced people, as a result of conflict and violence. The economy of Yemen is heavily reliant on oil exports. However, production has declined in recent years and the country is now a net importer of oil. Agriculture is also an important part of the economy, with around a quarter of the workforce employed in the sector. Yemen has a long history and has been inhabited since ancient times. The Sabaeans, Himyarites, and Persians all ruled over parts of the country at different times. Yemen was also a key trading hub on the incense and spice route. In the 7th century, Islam spread to Yemen and the country became part of the Muslim world. Yemen has been in a state of conflict for many years. In the 1960s, a civil war broke out between the royalist forces and the republicans. This was followed by a series of coups and counter-coups. In 1990, North and South Yemen unified to form the Republic of Yemen. However, the country has remained unstable and has been wracked by civil war, terrorist attacks, and a humanitarian crisis.
