Elizabeth Blackwell explained to kids

Elizabeth Blackwell was a doctor who was born in England in 1821. Her family moved to the United States when she was a child. Blackwell was the first woman in the United States to get a medical degree. She graduated from Geneva Medical College in New York in 1849. Blackwell believed that women should be allowed to be doctors. She thought that women could be just as good at medicine as men. Blackwell opened a hospital for women in New York City in 1857. The hospital later moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. During the American Civil War, Blackwell worked as a nurse. She helped to train other nurses. Blackwell also wrote a book about her experiences during the war. After the war, Blackwell returned to England. She opened a medical college for women in London, England. Blackwell died in 1910.
