Literature explained to kids

Literature is a term used to describe written or spoken material. It can be anything from a book to a newspaper article, or even a speech. The word “literature” comes from the Latin word “litera”, which means “letter”. Most literature is either fiction or non-fiction. Fiction is a story that is made up, while non-fiction is a true story. There are also different types of literature, such as poetry, plays, and novels. Poetry is a type of literature that uses words to create images and feelings. Poems can be about anything, from love to nature. They are often short, and use rhyme and meter to create a special effect. Plays are another type of literature. They are usually written in script form, and are meant to be performed on a stage. Plays often have more than one character, and are usually about some kind of conflict or problem. Novels are long, fictional stories. They can be about anything, but are usually about people and their relationships. Novels often have a lot of detail, and can take place in different settings. There are also non-fiction books, which are true stories. These can be about history, science, or anything else. Non-fiction books often have pictures and illustrations. Some literature is meant to be read, while other literature is meant to be heard. This is called “oral literature”. Oral literature includes things like folktales, myths, and legends. It is often passed down from generation to generation. Literature is important because it can help us understand different cultures and times. It can also help us understand ourselves and the world around us.
