Ancient Greece was a time period of great achievement. The Greeks were known for their art, literature, and philosophy. They also made important advances in science and mathematics. The ancient Greeks lived in city-states. The largest and most powerful city-state was Athens. Athens had a strong navy, and it was also a center of learning. The Greeks invented democracy, which is a system of government in which all citizens have a say in the decisions that are made. The ancient Greeks were also great warriors. They fought many wars, such as the Persian Wars and the Peloponnesian War. The Greeks were finally defeated by the Romans in the Battle of Actium in 31 BCE. After the Romans conquered Greece, the country became a province of the Roman Empire. Roman rule was ended in 476 CE when the last Roman emperor was overthrown. The ancient Greeks left a lasting legacy. Their culture has influenced many other cultures, and their ideas are still studied and used today.
