Dentistry is the branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases, disorders, and conditions of the oral cavity, the teeth, and the maxillofacial (jaw and facial) area. The dentist, also known as the dental surgeon, is the health care professional who is responsible for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of oral diseases, disorders, and conditions. Dentistry is divided into five main branches: 1. Prosthodontics: This branch deals with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases, disorders, and conditions of the teeth and the oral cavity. 2. Orthodontics: This branch deals with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of malocclusions (bad bites), which may be due to tooth irregularities, jaw irregularities, or both. 3. Periodontics: This branch deals with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases, disorders, and conditions of the gums and the supporting structures of the teeth. 4. Oral and maxillofacial surgery: This branch deals with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases, disorders, and conditions of the oral cavity, the teeth, the jaws, and the face. 5. Pediatric dentistry: This branch deals with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases, disorders, and conditions of the oral cavity, the teeth, and the face of children.
