Cyprus is an island country located in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. Cyprus is the third largest and third most populous island in the Mediterranean. Cyprus is located south of Turkey, west of Syria and Lebanon, northwest of Israel and Palestine, and north of Egypt.
The island of Cyprus has a rich history dating back to the Bronze Age. Cyprus was settled by Mycenaean Greeks in the 2nd millennium BC. Cyprus was subsequently ruled by the Ottoman Empire from 1571 until the island was annexed by the British Empire in 1914. Cyprus was divided into two parts in 1960, with the northern part becoming the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and the southern part becoming the Republic of Cyprus.
