Republic of Artsakh explained to kids
The Republic of Artsakh is a landlocked country in the South Caucasus region of Eurasia. It is bordered by Armenia to the west and Azerbaijan to the east, and has a small portion of its territory (the Nagorno-Karabakh enclave) in southwestern Azerbaijan.
The country's capital and largest city is Stepanakert. The population of Artsakh is around 150,000, which is about evenly split between Armenians and Azerbaijanis.
The Republic of Artsakh is not recognized by any country in the world, though it has de facto control over most of its territory. The Nagorno-Karabakh War, which lasted from 1988 to 1994, resulted in the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Azerbaijanis from the country.
The Republic of Artsakh is a member of the United Nations, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, and the Collective Security Treaty Organization.
