Indigenous peoples explained to kids

Indigenous peoples are groups of people who have historical ties to a particular place. They are often the original inhabitants of that place. "Indigenous" can also mean "coming from the land." This is important because indigenous peoples have a special connection to the land where they live. There are many different indigenous peoples around the world. The largest group is the Han Chinese, who make up about 18% of the world's population. Other examples of indigenous peoples include the Inuit of the Arctic, the Maya of Central America, and the Aboriginal peoples of Australia. Indigenous peoples often have their own language, culture, and traditions. They also often have a different way of life than the people who live around them. For example, the Inuit people of the Arctic live in a very different way than the Han Chinese people of China. The United Nations has a special organization that works with indigenous peoples. It is called the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. The forum helps to make sure that the rights of indigenous peoples are respected.
