Nepal is a landlocked country in southern Asia, between the Tibet autonomous region of China and India. With an area of 147,181 square kilometers (56,827 sq mi), Nepal is the world's 93rd largest country by land area and the 41st most populous country. It is the 49th largest country by population. Nepal has a diverse geography, including fertile plains, subalpine forested hills, and eight of the world's ten tallest mountains, including Mount Everest, the highest point on Earth. Kathmandu is the nation's capital and the country's largest metropolis.
Nepal is a federal republic composed of seven provinces. Each province is headed by a provincial governor who is appointed by the president on the advice of the prime minister. The provinces are further divided into local units, including municipalities, wards, and village development committees. Nepal is a multi-ethnic, multilingual, and multi-religious country. The majority of the Nepali population is Hindu, but there are also significant populations of Buddhists, Muslims, and Christians. Nepal has been a member of the United Nations since 1955, and joined the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation in 1985.
Nepal is a developing country, with a GNP per capita of US$1,360. It is ranked 145th out of 188 countries on the Human Development Index. In 2016, life expectancy at birth in Nepal was 68.5 years for males and 72.5 years for females. The total fertility rate was 2.3 children per woman in 2016. The infant mortality rate was 37.5 per 1,000 live births in 2015.
