Burundi is a small country located in Africa. It is bordered by Rwanda to the north, Tanzania to the east and south, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west. The capital city is Bujumbura. Burundi is a landlocked country, which means it does not have any coastline or access to the ocean. The country is hilly and has many rivers and lakes. Lake Tanganyika, which is the second largest lake in Africa, is located in Burundi. The population of Burundi is about 11 million people. The official languages are French and Kirundi. Swahili is also spoken. The majority of the people in Burundi are farmers. They grow crops such as maize, rice, sweet potatoes, and beans. They also keep cows, goats, and chickens. Burundi is a poor country and many people do not have enough to eat. One in four children is malnourished. Burundi also has one of the highest rates of HIV/AIDS in the world. The government of Burundi is a republic. The president is the head of state. Burundi has been through a lot of violence and conflict in recent years. In 2015, the country held its first democratic elections in 20 years.
