South Ossetia is a region in Georgia that is mostly inhabited by ethnic Ossetians. The region has been the site of conflict between Georgia and Russia, and in 2008, Russia recognized South Ossetia as an independent country. However, most other countries do not recognize South Ossetia as an independent country, and it is not a member of the United Nations.
