Gravity explained to kids
Gravity is the force that attracts objects towards each other. It is what makes it possible for us to stand on the ground, and what makes objects fall.
The strength of gravity depends on two things: the mass of the objects, and the distance between them. The more massive an object is, the more gravity it has. And the closer two objects are to each other, the stronger the force of gravity between them.
Earth's gravity comes from all its mass. All its mass makes a combined gravitational pull on all the mass in your body. That's what gives you weight. And if you were on a planet with less mass than Earth, you would weigh less than you do here.
The force of gravity also keeps all of the planets in orbit around the Sun. Without gravity, the planets would fly off into space.
Gravity is a very important force. It is what keeps us attached to the Earth, and what keeps the planets in their orbits.
