Gorillas are a large ape that is native to Africa. They are the largest living primate, with males averaging 1.7 m (5 ft 7 in) in height and females 1.5 m (4 ft 11 in). Gorillas live in family groups led by a single adult male, called a silverback. Gorillas are very intelligent animals and have been known to use tools. They are also very shy and gentle creatures. However, gorillas can be dangerous if they feel threatened. They are not usually aggressive unless they are provoked. Gorillas are endangered due to hunting and habitat loss. They are also at risk from diseases such as Ebola. There are only about 700 gorillas left in the wild.
