Hummingbirds are birds that are native to the Americas and that are known for their ability to fly very quickly and to hover in mid-air. There are over 300 species of hummingbird, and they come in a wide variety of colors and sizes. Hummingbirds are very small birds, and the smallest species is just 2.25 inches long! The largest species is about 8 inches long. Most hummingbirds weigh less than an ounce, which is about the same as a penny. Hummingbirds are able to fly very quickly, and their wings can beat up to 200 times per second! When they are flying, they make a humming sound because of the way their wings move. Hummingbirds are also able to hover in mid-air, and they can even fly backwards! This is because their wings are shaped differently than most other birds' wings. Hummingbirds eat nectar from flowers, and they also eat small insects. They have a long tongue that they use to reach the nectar inside of flowers. Hummingbirds are found in North and South America, and they typically live in warm climates. Some species of hummingbird migrate, which means that they travel to different areas at different times of the year. Hummingbirds are very interesting and beautiful birds, and they are fun to watch!
