Austria is a landlocked country in Central Europe. It is bordered by Germany and the Czech Republic to the north, Slovakia and Hungary to the east, Slovenia and Italy to the south, and Switzerland and Liechtenstein to the west. Austria has an area of 83,879 square kilometers (32,386 square miles) and a population of 9.03 million people. The capital and largest city is Vienna. Austria is a parliamentary republic and is one of six countries in the world with a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council. Austria is also a member of the European Union, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, the United Nations, the Schengen Area, and the Council of Europe. Austria's terrain is mostly mountainous, with the Alps occupying the majority of the country. The Austrian climate is temperate, with cool winters and warm summers. Austria's history is long and complex, dating back to the time of the Roman Empire. In the Middle Ages, Austria was a powerful duchy, and later an empire, ruled by the Habsburg dynasty. In the 19th century, Austria was a founding member of the German Confederation, and later became part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. After World War I, Austria was reduced to a small republic, and after World War II, it was occupied by the Allies and became a founding member of the United Nations. In 1955, Austria regained its full independence. Austria is a wealthy country, with a high standard of living. It is home to some of the world's most famous musicians, artists, and architects.
