Moldova is landlocked and bordered by Romania to the west and Ukraine to the north, east, and south. The terrain of Moldova is mostly hilly and forested. The climate of Moldova is temperate and has warm summers and cold winters.
Moldova was part of the Soviet Union from 1940 to 1991. After the Soviet Union collapsed, Moldova became an independent country. In 1992, a civil war broke out in Moldova. The war ended in 1994.
Since becoming independent, Moldova has been working to improve its economy. However, the country is still one of the poorest in Europe. About one-third of Moldova's population lives below the poverty line.
Moldova is a member of the United Nations, the World Trade Organization, and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.
